What’s the connection between a Slinky and Penn State?
Richard James ’39 was working to develop a means to stabilize sensitive instruments aboard naval vessels travelling on rough seas. He was experimenting with tension springs when he accidentally dropped one and watched as the spring “stepped” around the room before settling back into its shape. This spurred an idea for the toy that was later named the Slinky by Richard’s wife, Betty. Richard & Betty James made a difference. Now you can too—make your difference by making a gift today.
