Penn State is home to the largest student-run philanthropic event in the world, the IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, known as THON. The 46-hour dance marathon raises money for the Four Diamonds Fund, a program at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital that helps families of children with cancer.
Since 1977, more than $70 million has been raised for the fund, assisting more than 2,000 families in Pennsylvania. In 2010, more than 15,000 Penn State students volunteered their time and efforts to raise more than $7.8 million, the highest one-year total in the event's history.
